The holiday of Lag B’Omer will be observed this year on Monday evening May 4th and Tuesday May 5th. At the heart of this day is the legacy of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, whose story continues to draw many to Mount Meron for reflection, connection, and spiritual gathering. Lag B’Omer is both a recreational and spiritual day, highlighted by nature outings and the lighting of bonfires. These flames symbolize the fire of Torah and the enduring spiritual connection of the Jewish people to their sacred heritage.

This year, Lag B’Omer coincides with International Firefighters Day, underscoring the importance of expressing gratitude to firefighters around the world who work tirelessly to protect our natural landscapes. Occurring at the start of the fire season, the holiday is also a time of heightened awareness.

Recognizing the central role of traditional observances, KKL-JNF is doing everything in its power to safeguard forested areas while encouraging the public to follow safety guidelines and act responsibly. This year, authorities have determined that, due to current weather conditions, it is prohibited to light bonfires on Lag B’Omer except in designated areas that KKL-JNF has identified as safe. KKL-JNF remains in a state of alert and preparedness, with dedicated firefighting teams ready to protect Israel’s forests.

Among its ongoing efforts, KKL-JNF maintains several projects in the Biriya Forest, situated adjacent to Mount Meron:
KKL-JNF also has several projects related to fire safety and protection:
May this special day deepen our appreciation for the land, our traditions, and the collective responsibility to preserve them.

Happy Lag B’Omer!
