תקציר
אווטארים וסוכנים וירטואליים משמשים כיום בממשקים בסביבה הביתית לניטור עצמי ולחברה. אחד המאפיינים שלהם הוא טבעם המולטימודאלי, שמאפשר יחסים אינטימיים בין המשתמשים לאווטאר. בהרצאה נדון בצורך ובטבעם של הממשקים, באתגרים שבעיצובם ונציע תכונות עיקריות לעיצוב והערכה של אפליקציות מסייעות המבוססות על אווטארים וסוכנים וירטואליים.

Avatars and Virtual Agents – Relationship & Multimodal Interfaces
In the Digital Era, we observe a change in the relationship between users and service providers in various areas of service. In addition we witness the use of various technologies to increase the effectiveness and quality of services across all primary and secondary users.
These technologies range from personal assistance, telemedicine systems, decision making tools, online and self-services applications and virtual agents; all providing information and assistance. The common thread between all these digital implementations, is they all require Human Machine Interfaces. These interfaces must be interactive, user friendly and inviting, to create user involvement and cooperation incentives. The challenge is to design interfaces which will best fit the target users and enable smooth interaction especially, for all types of users including the special populations. Avatars and Virtual Agents are one of the interfaces used for the home environment, self-monitoring and companionship. They are also inherently Multimodal in nature and allow an intimate relation between the users and the Avatar. We will discusses the need and nature of these relationship models, the challenges of designing them and propose key features for the design and evaluation in the area of assistive applications using Avatar and Virtual agents.

Dr. Nava Shaked is an Engineering faculty member of HIT- Holon Institute of Technology and adjunct professor at the Ph.D program in CUNY GC, Linguistics Department. She holds a Ph.D. from CUNY GC in Computational Linguistics since 1994. Shaked is an expert in Natural Language processing, artificial Intelligence as well Human Machine interaction. With 20 years experience both in speech technology research as well as leading major projects in Israel, Europe and the US. Shaked was acting as a freelance consultant for major enterprises specialized in Voice Technologies, leading customer strategy, designing system architecture, providing some Professional Service and leading projects from the client's side. Shaked is a member of AVIOS www.AVIOS.org board and established the Israeli local chapter which she is chairing.
